Is skiing in Zermatt expensive? It depends on how you measure it.

A recent article published in Tourism Review News referenced the annual “European Ski Price Index”  by Holidu, which compares the cost of skiing in resorts around the world.
The index takes into account everything from lift tickets, to accommodation, as well as meals on the mountain, and aprés-ski. Is skiing in Zermatt expensive?

The findings show that there are many, smaller resorts around the Alps in particular, that offer a more cost-effective ski experience than some of the more famous resorts, all of which makes sense when you consider the caché of Cortina or the glamour of Gstaad.

These two knew how to keep down the cost of deckchairs

However, while Zermatt features in the top ten of the most expensive ski resorts, what the index also very helpfully includes is the length of slopes available.

And taking into account the length of runs in resort this makes Zermatt, based on a daily cost per person, the cheapest resort, per kilometre, in the whole list, at the bargain price of 0.85 Euro per kilometre!
Is skiing in Zermatt expensive?
So, when you’re trying to decide which resort to pick for your next ski holiday, don’t forget Zermatt’s 322km of runs, skiable from the end of the November until the end of April and its crisp high-altitude snow.
And if you do feel in the mood for a glass of wine at an elegant table for lunch with Matterhorn view, well, perhaps that’s a little treat worth considering.
