The Alplinks Project – Linking the Matterhorn to the Monte Rosa Ski Area

The Alplink project of linking Zermatt and Cervinia to the Monte Rosa ski area might be “possible”. According to the Fondazione Montagna Sicura, the Italian foundation responsible for the study of the new project.

In the last few weeks FMS has been travelling aroun the Val d’Aosta region, in Italy, to present the project. The “doability” of the link between the famous ski area Zermatt-Cervinia to the ski areas that surrounds the Monte Rosa Massif, within the Italian boarders.

The new link would pass through the protected valley of Val D’Ayas, using a semi-suspended cable way of around 8km length.
Before discussing the type of lift that could be used, studies had to be done in order to understand whether the project was suitable for the area. And if it was worth the environmental impact on the valley.

According to the study, the Alplinks project would face problems including:
The increase of temperatures in the immediate future.
The possible year round variations of precipitation (with a decrease in the summer and an increase during the winter months).
The possible increase of altitude of the safe snow line (from 1600 to 2000m).
Strong reduction in the glacier mass (around 60% in the next 150 years).

With these points in mind the foundation expressed a “favourable opinion” towards the new link project, as it would be “altimetrically favourable”.  Though, the climate changes of the next few years will need to be “taken into consideration with the formulation of an adaptive strategy to the project”.
The new lift would have an estimated cost of 60 milion Euro, with the participation of all the lift companies involved, including the Swiss Zermatt Bergbahnen.
The towns involved are Zermatt, Cervinia, Valtournenche, Champeluc, Gressoney, Alagna Valsesia.
The ski area would increase to a whopping 549 linear km, becoming one of the largest in Europe.
